THE DOUBLING OF THE GWAING RIVER BRIDGE CROSSING ON NATIONAL ROUTE 2 SECTION 7 KM 17.3
CONTRACT VALUE: R161,200.00
COMMENCEMENT DATE: 29th JANUARY 2018
CONTRACT PERIOD: 27 MONTHS
COMPLETION DATE: 28TH JULY 2020
The project is located in the Western Cape along the garden route on National Route 2 Section 7 (N/27) and is situated near the George Airport between Mossel Bay to the west and George to the east. The project extends from approximately km 16.4 to km 18.62 along the N2/7 and crosses the Gwaing River.
The existing Gwaing River Bridge is situated at km 17.254 and carries the N2 over the Gwaing River on a single structure. A concrete barrier currently separates the traffic over the bridge.
Cleared area for access to riverbed and installation of Armco pipe for water diversion.
The total width of the current bridge is +/- 16.2m and regarded inadequate to maintain the desired level of service. It was deemed preferable that a new adjacent bridge structure with associated road works be constructed. This project is the doubling of the N2 Gwaing River at km 17.25 between the George Airport and George. The new bridge is 180 meters long and the width is 15.45 meters wide. The new bridge will accommodate the North bound traffic to Knysna with the old bridge accommodate the South bound traffic to Mossel Bay

Building of access for the decking support, power rigs and all other operations in the river. An access road was required and this was accomplished by the placement of a 3 m diameter 30 meters long pipes to divert the river water. This water diversion will enable dry working space for the construction of a platform for the piling as well as a platform for deck support work.
